Rio Ayampe

This unique sea-level humid forest also known as foggy rainforest is formed due to the nearby mountain range of Chongon-Colonche that condenses the moisture from the ocean which feeds the Rio Ayampe.  Ayampe is just 15 km to the  north is Machalilla National Park which is a dry forest; these two very contrasting places make a superb are for birders.  Additionally the Aymape Rive flows to the ocean and forms a lagoon with mangroves near the town of Ayampe which is home for more bird species.

The entire mountain range of Chongon-Colonche is the only fresh water source in the area and contains stunning biodiversity.  The importance of Rio Ayampe area has been noted by Birdlife International who has declared it as an IBA EC107 as part of the Machalilla National Park area.

This restricted range environment is home of the Esmeraldas Woodstar which prefers humid forest also known as foggy rainforest at the foothills of the ocean.
