This new birding place has been gaining reputation due to a large Lek of Long-wattled Umbrellabird. This small community of farmers who migrated from the south of Ecuador in search of better land have destroyed large plots of the forest around their town and converted them into farming ground. This is the typical story that has destroyed 99% of the primary forest on the west slopes. The good news is that with the interests of birders and students from Universidad Catolica who are doing research on the Long-wattled Umbrellabird, the people from this community are starting to have some interest in conservation as they see that the birds attract birders, and potential income.

On our visit we had great luck with the Umbrellabirds, and also with many other birds we found by driving to the higher land where we recorded 47 species in a couple of hours.
